Evia (Euboea) is Greece's second-largest island, yet it is one of the most overlooked — which is exactly why it makes a perfect 4×4 weekend. It sits right across the water from our bases near Athens, so you can be on a mountain track or a quiet cove within a couple of hours of leaving the city. No long ferry crossings, no crowds, just real terrain and room to breathe.

How do you get to Evia from Athens with a 4×4?
You have two easy options, both quick. You can drive straight onto the island over the bridge at Chalkida — no ferry needed — which is the fastest route to central and northern Evia. For southern Evia, the short ferry from Rafina to Marmari is the natural choice and it is minutes from our Marathon base. Either way you are on the island fast, with a full tank and your camp kit already loaded.

What is the best 3-day Evia route?
This loop balances mountain, gorge and coast without long driving days.
Day 1 — South Evia. Cross to Marmari or drive down from Chalkida and head for Karystos, the relaxed seaside town under Mount Ochi. Settle into an organized campsite near the coast, swim, and watch the light go down over the Aegean from your rooftop tent.
Day 2 — Mount Ochi and Dimosari Gorge. This is the heart of the trip. A 4×4 takes you high onto Mount Ochi, past the famous stone “dragon houses” (drakospita) and old windmill ridges, with the Dimosari Gorge offering one of the finest day hikes in southern Greece — running water, plane trees and sea views. Back to camp for the night.
Day 3 — Coast and back. Take the quieter coastal roads north, stop at a few pull-offs for a final swim, and loop back toward Chalkida or your ferry. You will leave already planning the next trip.
Prefer the green north instead? Swap in Aidipsos thermal springs, the Drymonas waterfalls and the pine coast around Pefki and Agia Anna — equally good, and easy to reach over the Chalkida bridge.

Evia has a good spread of organized campsites along the south and north coasts, so you are never far from a proper, legal place to sleep with facilities. We never promote wild camping — it is illegal in Greece and it damages the places we all come to enjoy. We will point you to the organized campsites and designated overland stops that work for your route when you book.
When is the best time to go?
Late spring (May–June) and autumn (September–October) are ideal: warm sea, comfortable hiking temperatures on Mount Ochi, and quiet campsites. July and August are beautiful too, especially up north under the pines, just busier on the coast. Winter weekends can be stunning and dramatic in the mountains if you are prepared.
