Toyota Hilux Overland Build — Greece's First Expedition Build

Stock Toyota Hilux double cab in grey — the starting point of the CamperJimny overland build

In October 2026 a stock Toyota Hilux arrives at our Marathon base. Over the following weeks we turn it into an expedition-ready 4×4 camper — built by people who drive what they rent, documented step by step. First guests take it out late 2026 / early 2027.

Pictured above: the starting point. A stock Hilux double cab, exactly as it arrives — nothing on it yet.

Why a Hilux, and why now

Four Jimnys, a Ranger and an electric CamperBuzz later, we know what our guests ask for on longer mainland routes: more room, a kitchen that lives in the truck, power that lasts a week at a campsite with no hookup, and a pickup that shrugs off Pindus gravel in November. The Ranger got us most of the way. The Hilux is where we start from a blank sheet and do it the way we'd build our own.

This is the first vehicle in the CamperJimny fleet built from the ground up for expedition travel — not a rental with a tent bolted on, but a complete overland setup, planned around real trips in Greece: Peloponnese coast-to-mountains loops, Zagori in shoulder season, Evia's east coast, the long way north.

The build list

Two things are fixed: a rooftop tent, and a proper drawer-and-kitchen build in the bed. Everything else gets decided on the truck, and we'll announce each component as it's fitted — not before. Plans change in a build; that's part of the story.

Sleeping

Rooftop tent, quick setup, real weather protection. Sleeps two up top.

Kitchen

Drawer-based kitchen in the bed: fridge, stove, the essentials. Cook and eat at the truck without unpacking.

Power

A power station sized for a week's fridge, lights and charging at a campsite with no hookup.

Storage

Drawer system in the bed so gear has a place and stays there on gravel.

Recovery & safety

Traction boards, tyre kit, compressor, first-aid — the things you hope not to need on a mountain track.

Comfort

Lighting, table and chairs, water storage, and the small details that make day five feel like day one.

CamperJimny Ford Ranger Wildtrak with two rooftop tents — the pickup that shaped the Hilux build
Our Ford Ranger Wildtrak, two seasons in. Everything it taught us goes into the Hilux.

The Ranger is the closest thing on the road today — two rooftop tents, sleeps up to five, and it's what we'll be comparing the Hilux against all winter. See the Ford Ranger Wildtrak →
